Marilyn Kerns: Digging Up Treasure...

Topic: Members

In honor of this week's release of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which features the return of film's most famous archaeologist, we are posting our 2000 interview with Marilyn Kerns (a.k.a "archaic1"), Gamesville's resident Indy.  What is her most prized discovery? Find out below...

Tomorrow: Eight years later, is Marilyn still digging up buried treasures? Has she visited the Temple of Doom?

GV: What is it like being an archaeologist?
MK: It's like being on a never-ending treasure hunt.

Where has your work taken you?
I've been all over the United States, as well as parts of the South Pacific. I've explored religious sites, burial grounds, all kinds of places.

Where did your interest in archaeology come from?
I read a children's book on archaeology when I was five, and I was hooked.

Which of your discoveries is your favorite?
This is always a tough question. If I had to choose ... my personal favorite is a line of six, lead WWI toy soldiers discovered right where a child left them, in 1925.

Which famous archaeological discovery do you wish was yours?
Cleopatra's palace in Alexandria's Eastern Harbor.

So you like underwater archaeology?
I think it's fascinating.

What's your best physical feature?
The pinkie finger of my right hand. I call it my Lucky Finger because it's the only one I haven't smashed on a dig.

Who's your hero?
Jacques Cousteau. He overcame adversity and proved you don't need a college degree to explore and teach.

When you're not exploring, what do you watch on TV?
Star Trek. It often demonstrates how superior cultures are not always better than primitive ones.

What's your favorite Gamesville game?
Acey Deucey, but I'm not very good at it. I'm waiting for your poker game to start.

What are three things you would never do?
Lie to my mother; steal from an archaeological site; step on the gas when I meant to step on the brake.

If someone's interested in becoming an archaeologist, what should they do?
Read, and go on digs with a local archaeology chapter.
